Monon Animal Hospital offers a variety of soft tissue surgeries for pets, whether they need a preventive procedure or more involved surgical intervention for disease or injury.
Is Anesthesia Safe for Pets?
Our hospital is equipped with the most up-to-date monitoring tools and anesthesia. In addition, we require that all patients undergo a full physical exam and blood work prior to their surgery in order to assess their health. We also tailor every pet’s anesthesia to their health, age, weight, and temperament. This allows us to reduce any potential risks and make surgery much safer. Furthermore, every pet has an assigned technician watching over them and keeping them comfortable for the duration.
Will My Pet Need Stitches?
In most, if not all surgery cases, pets will need stitches. We generally use absorbable sutures that go under the skin to help keep the surgical site closed so it can heal. As their name implies, these sutures are intended to dissolve over time so removal is not necessary. For more involved surgeries (like tumor removals), external skin sutures may also be needed.
While your pet is at home recovering, it’s important to keep an eye on their stitches for signs of swelling, redness, and discharge. If your pet licks and chews at their stitches, they may need additional pain relief medication and an e-collar to prevent further damage to the incision site.
Is My Pet Going to be in Pain?
We do everything possible to keep your pet’s pain levels to a minimum. This includes giving pain relief medication before, during, and after their surgery to control their pain and make recovery easier (and quicker) when they return home. If necessary, we can also provide medications for you to dispense at home.
What to Expect
First, you can expect a call the night before your pet’s surgery to confirm their appointment. Next, please allow yourself time before your pet’s surgery to complete paperwork and ask any questions you have about the upcoming procedure. When you come to pick up after surgery, we will give you detailed instructions to guide you through the post-op process.
